The Martin Retro guitars have been out for a little while in North America. I have tried two models of the series, the OM-28 and HD-28 styles. Modern, well built Martin guitars with modern modified C-shape necks, and vintage styling. The hallmark of the Retro series is the modified Fishman Aura system onboard the guitars which uses an undersaddle pickup but passes on the signal modified to a preset digital sound sample. These sound samples come from vintage original guitars of the same style in the Martin collection in their museum.
Fishman Pickups has designed a system which supposedly gives you access to all the great sounds of vintage guitars.
I remind readers that Martin is not the first guitar company to try this... A few years ago, the CA Guitar company of Louisiana incorporated the Aura system into several of it's models. I have a Bluegrass Performer with this system onboard and can say that it works very well. I simply use my favourite sample all the time so I don't really find a need for a lot of samples!
This video shows a carbon fibre CA guitar, but this one has a different pickup in it.
I have to say that the Martin OM-28E I tried was a very nice guitar. But for the price, I'd rather have the plain OM-21 that Martin has also released. As for the Aura system, it's very impressive if you play plugged in. I like the system in my carbon fibre CA guitar. It's really the perfect guitar for cold northern climates! I leave it in the car without worrying about it freezing. I take it out of the case and it's in tune, and doesn't go out of tune when it warms up. It's virtually indestructible...
But you asked about Martin guitars.... ;D
