I förgår var det en halsformningsdag. Jag formar halsar mestadels med enkla handverktyg och använder mig av så lite mått och mallar som möjligt. Om kunden har en precis önskan om någon halsform och tjocklek så kan det tillfredsställas med hjälp av mätmetoder men normalt sett så går jag önskemål till mötes genom att efter samtal översätta önskemålet till min känsla och sedan forma halsen efter den känslan. Min övertygelse är att det har sin fördel i att känsla ofta är viktigare än mått. Jag bygger också mina halsar så lätta som möjligt. Lätthet är överhuvudtaget ett av mina viktigaste aspekter på instrumentbygge. Det ger en helt annan möjighet för respons hos instrumentet. Mina större gitarrer brukar landa på ca 1.5 kg.

1,5 kg är klart imponerande. Min Runessonmandolin är f ö ungefär ett hekto lättare än min Collings MF5, men där är det väl knorren som väger, antar jag.
Mina lättaste gitarrer är två 17-tumsjumbo i lönn resp. koa, och de väger knappt 2 kg. De känns lätta, och intrycket är att det är kroppen som är lätt. De övriga är i Dalbergia Nigra och Dalbergia Latifolia som är tyngre träslag; inte så små de heller, dreaden är smalast. Det tyngsta jag känt på är antagligen en Lowden i "African Blackwood", som mig veterligt är den tätaste av alla Dalbergior.
Nu är det väl inte så stor enighet om att just halsen ska vara lätt - styv ska den dock vara. Från sent 70-tal erinrar jag mig en intervju med John Gréven i Mugwumps där han beskriver hur en del rentav lägger in extra tunga material i halsen. Minns ej varför.

Gamla parlors som är lätta väger kilot, de som känns tyngre några hekto mer. 1.5 kg för en stor gitarr är lätt

Ja, det kommer mikrofon i oktavisarna, redan förberedda men jag monterar dom när allt är färdigt. Blir lättare med lackeringen utan hål för kontakten och framförallt utan kontakten ivägen för pensel, sudd och pimpstenspolering.

Jag håller just nu på med lackeringsarbetet men för några veckor sedan såg det ut så här en dag när jag gjorde urtagen på halsarna där den förstärkningsprofil av aluminium som stödjer greppbrädeöverhänget ska sitta. Den ena oktavmandolinen ska levereras till sin nya ägare på Korröfestivalen så det börjar dra ihop sig....

Tja, utvecklat och utvecklat...det är min egen variant på månghundraåriga varianter på huvuden. Vet inte riktigt vad du syftar på exakt när du skriver "annorlunda lösning" men det finns väl inget direkt på dom huvudena som inte kan hittas på gamla och andra nya instrument. Däremot har jag gjort min egen variant eller om man vill kalla det "design" på huvudena. Dom båda huvudena på bilden skiljer sig dock från varandra utseendemässigt ganska rejält om du tittar närmare. Jag gillar att skapa individer och jobbar fritt på alla former vilket leder till att varje instrument får många unika utseendedetaljer. Spelar väl kanske mindre praktisk roll men det blir roligare för mig! Dock tror jag iofs också på det individualistiska hos instrument liksom hos människor, tror att sådana små detaljer kan påverka på ett inspirerande vis hos många musiker.
Vidare går huvudet ut från halsen med en i princip obefintlig vinkel - i princip rakt ut. Detta ger en mycket stabilare konstruktion i jämförelse med ett vinklat huvud som ofta bryts eller blir väldigt ostabilt i själva vinkeln tack vara träets riktning just där. Jag bygger även mina gitarrer med väldigt liten huvudvinkel av samma orsak. En annan fördel är att man får ett lättare tryck på översadel eller nollband vilket är en stor fördel för ton och stämstabilitet då strängarna får mindre friktion mot översadeln/nollband.
Nu ska jag iväg för att bygga vidare på gitarren som jag började på förra veckan. Sedan blir det konsert i verkstaden med en amerikanaduo ikväll, ska bli skoj!

Så här såg det ut på dagens verkstadskonsert. Sedan har jag också hyvlat locket till den gitarren jag håller på med just nu. Limmade även ihop bitarna till halsen. Det finns ju annat än gitarrbyggeri också. Tex måste man ibland rätta till gamla gitarrer...här från gårdagen då jag jobbade på Gitarren Total. Fräser ut för halsförstärkning på en gammal Gretsch Elektromatic (en rejält ovanlig modell). Om man måste fräsa så gillar jag bäst att fräsa på fri hand, blir betydligt intressantare. Klart för att limma in dom tre kolfiberstavarna. Jag försöker att alltid göra riktiga stopp i båda ändarna med en liten bit från en kolfiberstav. Utan stop riskerar man att halsen böjer sig runt om stavarna genom att det mjuka halsträet äter sig in i stavarna. Behövs inte mycket av det för att halsen ska tillåtas att böja sig från strängdraget.

Jag limmar stavarna med Araldig Epoxi. Precis såsom Magnus förtydligar menar jag. Det finns en risk att träet trycks ihop i ändarna av stavarna och då kan det böja sig där kring stavarna som inte böjs. Förmodligen håller epoxilimmet tillräckligt bra för att detta inte ska hända men jag gillar att säkra extra när det är möjligt vad det gäller kolfiberstavar i halsar. 1 cm kvadratcentimeters anliggningsyta är inte så mycket om halsträet är så mjukt som på denna Gretschen (byggd av Harmony) och ska hålla för 013 strängar i normalstämning. Rent funktionsmässigt hade jag utan att tveka valt en ställbar dragstång men på denna gitarren som är så ovanlig gäller det att allt jobb ska bli osynligt.

Känner inte det som någon risk, måste bara ha halsen bra fixerad, båda händerna på fräsen och vara koncentrerad. Fördelen är att man har en bättre översyn på vad som händer och att man kan jobba friare och enklare utan att alltid behöva ha en fräsjigg som ska passa för just det ändamålet. Sista fina biten i ändarn och längs med sidorna justerar jag sedan snabbt med stämjärn till bra passform. Sist kapar jag stavarna till en längd som nästan är för lång.

Ett stopp är aldrig fel, men jag tror personligen att det inte behövs. Kanske om halsen är i al eller liknande mjukt trä. Det finns ju ändå en greppbräda ovanpå skarven och hela kolfiberstaven som borde ge tillräcklig styrka för den lilla biten ovanför kolfiberstaven. Fräser man hela vägen genom dove tailen som jag brukar har man inget problem i den änden, det ska mycket till om en epoyx limmad kolfiberstav ska kunna röra sig i utfräsningen pga strängdraget.
Jag lägger på ett "lock" i trä ovanpå kolfiberstaven (limmas med epoxylim) så att hudlimmet kan få fäste mot greppbrädan. Innan jag epoxylimmar virar jag in hela halsen i gladpack, det där kletiga kladdet har en förmåga att hamna lite överallt annars. Inte ens epoxy fäster på gladpack!
